Ekphrasis
Go and catch a falling star,
Get with child a mandrake root,
Tell me where all past years are,
Or who cleft the devil’s foot...
Well, you can fuck that noise, John Donne!
Winning the heart of another grows increasingly more intangible as social media sites make all of our joys, dismays, and bodily functions a publicly traded commodity for advertisers, who are the only ones capable of capturing the heart (and wallet) of the average netizen as we enter the teens of the 21st century. The artist questions whether the traditional and heart-warming resistance dance of the boy chasing the girl until she catches him (as romanticized in silver screen films by Frank Capra and his ilk) is actually a simple ball game: Here, two would-be lovers pass their heart-shaped passion back and forth like a Newton’s cradle in a psychiatrist’s office, all against the backdrop of fractured hearts in a Pollockesque background of disjointed striping. But then again, sometimes a cigar is only a cigar, yet images may still be treacherous: Ceci est un cœur.
