As the human race gradually devolves into an overly-saturated caricature of itself, so does this painting of the artist, whose own features remain static in the real world as the painting slowly transforms in the manner of Oscar Wilde’s Picture of Dorian Gray. Viewers are cautioned that the true horror of this work is the accuracy with which it reflects their own ongoing inner transmogrification, not the lack of technical ability of the artist in the realm of representational portraiture. Crude brush strokes and Lichtensteinian print-cartoon dots create both tension and terror in this prescient painting of mankind’s reversion into crude absurdity.
