Undaunted by proofs requiring supercomputers, Columbus the cat obsessed over the four color map theorem, and spent many of his waking hours attempting a proof that would be intelligible by hominid and feline alike. Eventually, though, he gave up when he realized that the world was far more lively when any color of the rainbow could be used to fill an object, just so long as each object with an adjacent boundary contained a different color. Greatly relieved by this insight, he spent his new-found time playing with strings—occasionally arranging them into the form of treble clefs—and keeping his home free of camelback crickets, which were quite the delicacy to him. Receiving belly-rubs from his human companions Peter and Doug made him peaceful as a dove, true to the etymology of his name, and his golden eyes presided over the peaceable kingdom at their home.
