Thomas Brodhead – American, born 1968 – Pareidolia –2014 – acrylic on canvas – 48" x 36" x 1.5" (121.92cm x 91.44cm x 3.81cm)
In a descent from simple boredom through fairly complex ennui to almost total anhedonia, the artist created this work to provide sufferers of OCD with an image on which to fixate. The painting contains simple suggestions of human and animal faces, the identification of which may provide hours of entertainment on par with searching for images of witches and gorillas on floor tiles. However, it may also serve to distract the viewer from pondering Roko’s Basilisk and other tripe haunting pointless social media sites that seem only to move us farther away from one another; whether this inhibits or accelerates the creation of the sentient, omnipotent singularity of Roko’s Basilisk is left to the viewer to decide.
